Program Directors
Program directors are the vital link between the ABPM and the next generation of Preventive Medicine physicians. This area serves as a resource for program directors to guide applicants through the certification process.
Exam Score Reports

Program directors may access their program graduates’
certification exam scores through the ABPM’s online Physician Portal. Certification exam scores from 2023 to 2025 are currently available; contact ABPM staff at [email protected] for older exam scores.

Training in Multiple Specialties or Subspecialties
ABPM provides two training options for physicians who plan to become certified in an ABPM specialty or subspecialty in addition to another ABMS specialty: Integrated training experiences and combined training programs. Integrated training experiences allow physicians to use research or electives from one training program to “jumpstart” into another training program, while combined training experiences reduce overall training time by eliminating duplicate educational components.
Approval by both the ABPM and the other relevant ABMS Member Board is required prior to a physician entering either type of training.

Integrated Training Experiences
An Integrated Training Experience (ITE) is a dual-training program that allows an individual resident or fellow to complete training in two residencies, two fellowships, or a residency and a fellowship simultaneously. ITEs do not truncate or reduce training time in an ABPM specialty or subspecialty.
The ITE must meet ABPM-sponsored residency/fellowship requirements; individuals who complete an ITE must meet the training requirements to be eligible for the certification exam in the relevant ABPM specialty or subspecialty.
ITE Guidelines
Proposals for an ITE must be submitted to ABPM at least 60 days prior to the date the physician plans to begin the program. Please note that the ITE must be approved by both the ABPM and the other ABMS Member Board before a physician can be accepted into and/or begin the proposed ITE. Any ITE proposal submitted after the physician has already started the training in the proposed ITE, will not be reviewed by the ABPM and, instead, will be summarily denied in writing, with copy to both the training program and the other ABMS member board.
Please note that while ABPM requires submission of the ITE only 60 days prior to the beginning of training, each ABMS Member Board has its own deadline for submitting ITE applications for review. Certain ABMS Member Boards require submission six months or more before the trainee is scheduled to start their portion of the ITE program and, therefore, you are strongly encouraged to check with the appropriate other ABMS Member Board for their specific submission deadline in order to ensure that your ITE application is submitted to them in a timely manner per their ITE policies.
Any block diagram submitted in support of an ITE proposal must be in a format that is materially consistent with the then-current version of the ACGME sample block diagram.

Combined Training Programs
A combined program allows a resident or fellow to complete training in more than one specialty or subspecialty. Combined programs reduce training time by allowing educational components required for each residency/fellowship program, which would otherwise be duplicated if completed separately, to be completed once and applied to both programs.
Organizations may submit an application once for approval of a combined program as a whole. It is not necessary to seek approval for each individual physician who participates in a combined program.
Requesting Approval for a Combined Training Program
To request approval for a combined training program, please review and complete the application form. Completed and signed forms may be emailed to [email protected] or mailed to ABPM at 111 West Jackson Blvd., Ste. 1408, Chicago, IL 60604.
The ABPM requires approved combined training programs to complete the evaluation form every five years. On the evaluation form, the program will report its completion rate, the non-ABPM Board examination take rate, the ABPM certification exam take rate, and the pass rate for all combined program graduates.
Please review the appropriate guidelines below prior to applying for approval of a new combined training program.
