  • The American Board of Preventive Medicine Elects a New Public Member to its Board of Directors

Chicago, IL, August 14, 2024: The American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) is pleased to announce the selection of Mr. Thomas A. Granatir as the Board’s incoming Public Member.

Mr. Granatir has extensive experience in healthcare policy and public health. Before his retirement in 2023, he was the Senior Vice President of Health Policy and External Relations at the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). He was also previously employed by Humana in a variety of roles in both the United States and Europe.

Through his work at ABMS, Mr. Granatir has become a firm supporter of the board certification system. “I’ve come to believe that the training system in the US is a treasure of commitment, creativity, and innovation; that the certification system is under valued and under leveraged; and that the values of the profession ought to be the guiding ideas of health system reform,” said Mr. Granatir. “[The Public Member role will] be a unique congruence of my professional experience in both health policy and certification and my personal passion for improving health and health care.”

“The ABPM is privileged to welcome Tom Granatir, whose passions are so well aligned with the core of Preventive Medicine, as the new Public Member on the Board of Directors,” said ABPM Chair Heather O’Hara, MD, MSPH. “Mr. Granatir’s skills, experience, and network will be vital to support the ABPM’s strategic goals. I look forward to working with him in the coming years.”

Mr. Granatir will begin his term on the Board in August 2025.

The ABPM is an ABMS Member Board. Founded in 1948, ABPM works with the ABMS in the development of standards for the ongoing assessment and certification of over 12,000 physicians certified by the ABPM in the specialties of Aerospace Medicine, Occupational and Environmental Medicine, and Public Health and General Preventive Medicine; and in the subspecialties of Addiction Medicine; Clinical Informatics; Health Care Administration, Leadership, and Management; Medical Toxicology; and Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine.
