  • The American Board of Preventive Medicine to Offer Clinical Informatics Certification Examination Using Updated Content Outline

Chicago, IL, March 18, 2021: The American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) announced today that the 2021 Clinical Informatics certification examination will follow an updated content outline. The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) in collaboration with the ABPM and the American Board of Pathology (ABPath) developed the new content outline designed to reflect the most up to date competencies required of today’s Clinical Informaticians.

“The ABPM is pleased that the 2021 Clinical Informatics certification exam will even more closely mirror the set of competencies, knowledge and skills today’s informaticians rely upon in their day-to-day practice,” said Hernando “Joe” Ortega, Jr., MD, MPH, ABPM’s Board Chair. “We are incredibly thankful for the engagement and effort of our Diplomate experts as well as the leadership of both AMIA and ABPath who collectively put forth the effort necessary to complete the practice analysis which was the precursor to ABPM’s approval of the updated outline for Clinical Informatics. ABPM truly appreciates our close working relationship with AMIA and ABPath, and the success of this endeavor is emblematic of the accomplishments that can be made when we collectively work toward a common goal. We also look forward to future collaborations with AMIA and ABPath on both initial as well as continuing certification programs in Clinical Informatics.”

  • The American Board of Preventive Medicine Announces Updates to the Special, Complementary, and Alternative Pathways for Certification in the Specialties of Aerospace Medicine, Occupational Medicine and Public Health & General Preventive Medicine

Chicago, IL, March 10, 2021: The American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) announced today that at its January 2021 meeting, the Board of Directors voted to update the eligibility requirements for the Special, Complementary, and Alternative Pathways to certification in Aerospace Medicine, Occupational Medicine and Public Health & General Preventive Medicine (each a “Specialty”).

The effective date for these changes is March 1, 2022 and therefore, do not impact applications made during the current 2021 Application Cycle.

    The changes are as follows:

Special Pathway: A Diplomate currently certified by the ABPM in a Specialty may apply to sit for an initial certification exam in a second Specialty through the Special Pathway. Should a current Diplomate seek certification in a third Specialty, the Diplomate will be required to apply through the ABPM’s Residency Pathway.

Complementary Pathway: This pathway is designed to accommodate physicians who wish to make a mid-career shift into the practice of Preventive Medicine. To qualify through the Complementary Pathway, physicians must; (i) complete a Master of Public Health or equivalent degree, (ii) complete at least two years of an ACGME-accredited residency and; (iii) complete one-year in an ACGME-accredited residency in the Preventive Medicine specialty in which certification is being sought. The Preventive Medicine residency program director must attest to the applicant’s successful completion of at least one year of the Preventive Medicine program.

Additionally, the Preventive Medicine residency program must include a direct patient care component. Aerospace Medicine and Occupational Medicine residency programs must include at least eight months of direct patient care; Public Health and General Preventive Medicine residency programs must include at least four months of direct patient care.

Applicants through the Complementary Pathway must complete a Master of Public Health or equivalent degree.

Alternative Pathway: The Alternative Pathway will close after the 2021 Application Cycle. Beginning with the 2022 Application Cycle, all applicants must qualify for Specialty certification through the Residency, Complementary, or Special Pathways.

“This revision ensures that all physicians applying for Specialty certification meet our rigorous standards for education and training prior to ABPM Specialty certification. As we move towards Continuing Certification, your Board carefully revised these requirements to update policy and streamline guidance for each pathway,” said Board Chair Hernando “Joe” Ortega, Jr., MD, MPH.

The requirements for all pathways will remain unchanged for the 2021 Application Cycle, which will open on March 15, 2021. Interested physicians may apply online after creating an account on the Physician Portal at https://certification.abpm-us.org/login. • The American Board of Preventive Medicine Expands Eligibility for Subspecialty Certification Examinations to Canadian-Trained Physicians

Chicago, IL, February 24, 2021: The American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) announced today that, at its January 2021 meeting, the Board of Directors voted to expand eligibility for subspecialty certification examinations to physicians trained in Canada and who possess primary board certification by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) or the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). To be eligible under the expanded rules, physicians must also complete an Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited fellowship in the ABPM subspecialty for which they are applying as well as meet all other eligibility criteria. The updated eligibility requirements will go into effect beginning with the 2021 application cycle.

“We are excited to offer our Canadian colleagues the opportunity to become certified in ABPM’s subspecialties,” said Hernando “Joe” Ortega, Jr., MD, MPH, Chair of ABPM’s Board of Directors. “This update is consistent with ABPM’s long-standing policy that allows Canadian-trained physicians to apply for specialty certification exams. Additionally, the expanded eligibility requirements provide Canadian-trained physicians a way to demonstrate their expertise in subspecialty areas which they might not otherwise have through Canadian certification boards.”

For more information about the eligibility requirements for ABPM specialty and subspecialty certification examinations, please see the ABPM website at https://www.abpm-us.org/become-certified/. The 2021 ABPM application cycle will open on March 15 and close June 30. • The American Board of Preventive Medicine Announces the Launch of its Longitudinal Assessment Program Pilot in Clinical Informatics

Chicago, IL, February 24, 2021: The American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) announced today that its Longitudinal Assessment Program (LAP) Pilot in Clinical Informatics is on schedule and will launch April 1. All ABPM Diplomates currently Certified in Clinical Informatics are required to participate in the LAP pilot.

During the LAP pilot program, Clinical Informatics Diplomates will answer 12 questions every six months for two years (April 2021 through March 2023). ABPM has contracted with SelfStudy, Inc., to provide the assessment platform and participants will be able to answer the questions online at their convenience during each six-month period. Information gathered during the LAP pilot, including participation data and Diplomate feedback, will then inform the ABPM’s design of an LAP for all ABPM specialties and subspecialties as part of a new continuing certification program. ABPM will not make certification decisions based on a Diplomate’s performance in the LAP pilot; however, all current Diplomates Certified by the ABPM in Clinical Informatics are required to participate in the LAP pilot in “good faith.”

“This is an incredibly exciting development in ABPM’s continuing certification program,” said ABPM Board Chair, Hernando “Joe” Ortega, Jr., MD, MPH. “This is a huge step in creating a more meaningful program that focuses on physician learning and practice improvement as we move away from the high-stakes, traditional recertification exam. We are very pleased to be able to pilot an assessment program that so many of our Diplomates have asked for and we are confident that they will find the platform convenient and easy-to-use, and the LAP a great way to enhance their knowledge in the subspecialty of Clinical Informatics.”

To participate in the pilot program, all Clinical Informatics Diplomates must:

    1. Ensure they have registered their Diplomate account on the ABPM’s online Physician Portal and that the contact information in their account is correct. Diplomates who are able to log into the Portal at http://certification.abpm-us.org/login and view their certification information have registered accounts. Diplomates may register their account at https://certification.abpm-us.org/diplomate-registration.
    2. Register on the SelfStudy, Inc., LAP platform. SelfStudy will send all eligible Diplomates an email in late March with instructions to register on the platform.

For more information about ABPM’s pilot LAP, please see the ABPM website at https://www.abpm-us.org/longitudinal-assessment-program-lap-pilot/. Diplomates can also reach ABPM Staff at [email protected] with any specific questions about the program.

  • The American Board of Preventive Medicine and the American Society of Addiction Medicine Announce a Four-Year Extension of the Practice Pathway for Addiction Medicine

Chicago, IL, November 30, 2020: The American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) and the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) jointly announced today the American Board of Medical Specialties’ (ABMS) approval of a four-year extension of the practice pathway in Addiction Medicine. This extension will allow physicians with substantial experience in the practice of Addiction Medicine, but who have not completed an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited fellowship in Addiction Medicine, to apply for the Addiction Medicine certification exam through the 2025 Exam Cycle.

“We are very pleased that ABMS recognized the importance of continuing to expand the workforce of ABPM Certified Addiction Medicine specialists at this challenging time,” said ABPM Chair, Hernando “Joe” Ortega, Jr., MD, MPH.  “The opioid crisis our nation has been battling for several years has now been compounded by the pandemic and what will undoubtedly be its lingering effects well beyond 2020. The nation clearly has a critical need for board-certified physicians in Addiction Medicine.  ABPM is proud to work with ASAM and other stakeholders as we shepherd this important subspecialty through its formative years.  As the Graduate Medical Education training system works to establish a robust pipeline for Addiction Medicine subspecialists, this approval ensures that those physicians with extensive Addiction Medicine experience may seek the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge via ABPM’s rigorous certification process.”

ASAM President Paul Earley, MD, DFASAM, concurred saying, “ASAM appreciates that its strong working relationship and shared purpose with ABPM was instrumental in the successful extension of the ABPM’s practice pathway in Addiction Medicine.  The pandemic has not only increased the need for board certified specialists but has also prevented otherwise-qualified physicians from pursuing certification due to overwhelming COVID-19 related workloads. Extending the practice pathway an additional four years to allow more experienced physicians to obtain ABPM Certification was a crucial step in the continuing fight against addiction in the United States.”

The ABPM’s application cycle opens in the Spring of each year, with the final deadline to submit applications in mid-summer. The ABPM administers the certification exams once per year, in the Fall. For updated deadlines and exam dates, please refer to the ABPM website: www.theabpm.org.

The ABPM is an ABMS Member Board. Founded in 1948, ABPM works with the ABMS in the development of standards for the ongoing assessment and certification of over 12,000 physicians certified by the ABPM in the specialties of Aerospace Medicine, Occupational Medicine, and Public Health and General Preventive Medicine; and in the subspecialties of Addiction Medicine, Clinical Informatics, Medical Toxicology, and Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine.
